If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having to quarantine or isolate for an extended period of time follow these instructions carefully:
1. Don't Panic! Your child is at the perfect age to learn best through play and 1-1 engagement with parents, caregivers and siblings.
2. Focus on the essentials, health and happiness. If those are not in place, learning will not happen anyway.
3. Simplify. In grade one we do a TON to keep the kids engaged and growing, at home you don't have to follow that pattern. Focus on the basics.
Reading (if you only do ONE thing, this is the thing) Read every day!
Our Get Epic class code is gjh4362
When you log in click on "Explore" there is a button named "F and P" Click on it and choose A-D level. This is the reading zone for most of our grade 1 kids, but they are always welcome to challenge themselves with E-F level books and enjoy having those books read to them.
Other good resources are Storyline online, Teach Your Monster to Read and Starfall.
Writing
Encourage your child to incorporate writing into their play time if they're feeling well enough.
If they are playing dolls, the dolls can write letters to each other.
If they are playing restaurant, have them make a menu.
If they are having a light saber battle, they can write up a poster defending the resistance!
At this level pictures with a couple sentences are great, and invented spelling is normal as long as they are attending to the sound of each part of the word. This isn't something you need to organize, just encourage and have writing supplies always handy.
Math.
We are working on Adding and Subtracting. This is a great thing to do at home, have your child count the silverware, beads, steps etc. they can play cards and add or subtract the numbers on the cards.
Khan Academy is another great resource for Math as well as Prodigy.
